About the Film
HEALING HEARTS tells the story of Israeli and Palestinian doctors working hand in hand in Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem to save the lives of Palestinian children born with severe heart malformations. The main character, Ibrahim Abu Zahira, is a Palestinian pediatric cardiologist who was trained in Israel and works on both sides of the wall.
The filmmaker Katya Chelli immersed herself in the daily life of the doctors, the children, and their families to shed light on the intense challenges faced by all in this life-saving work.
About the Filmmaker
After studying classical ballet for several years, Katya Chelli gave up her dream of becoming a classical ballerina due to back problems. She then studied Russian and German and eventually turned to film editing, which requires a sense of rhythm. She worked as an assistant editor in both the US and then in France, her current home. Among the directors she worked with are Robert Altman, Nikita Mikhalkov, and Costa Gavras. After editing several feature films, she turned to documentary film editing. HEALING HEARTS is her first film as a director.
