About the Play
Picking Up Stones: An American Jew’s Moral Dilemma, a new play by Sandra Laub, comes right up to the present moment, blending wry humor, tragedy, and voices of differing political, cultural and religious stripes to create a fresh commentary on what it means to be a liberal Jew in America today: balancing allegiance to Israel, taking a stand against antisemitism and trying to act out of a morality based on Jewish values. Actress Sandra Laub commands the stage in this one hour-15 minute one woman show.

For many Jews in America, the recent sharp right political turn in Israel sounded an alarm. From ‘judicial reform’ to brutal crackdowns on Palestinians, American Jews, especially liberal ones, want to support Israel and fight anti-semitism, while disagreeing with anti-democratic policies and attitudes of Israel’s current far-right government.

Sandra Laub interweaves her 10 years of experience playing Golda Meir on tour in the Tony Award -winning play, Golda’s Balcony, and her travels in Israel during 2014’s summer of Operation Protective Edge (the Gaza War) with characters from David Hare’s play, Via Dolorosa. She overlays observations about current events unfolding in Israel, resulting in a new and timely one-woman play, and an invitation to engage in post-show discussion about the play with Faisal Saleh, founder and director of Palestine Museum US in Woodbridge CT.
