Artist & Writers Discuss Current Human Rights Crisis in US & Palestine

Due to current political climate in the US, our Artist Talks program will be reoriented to a politically engaged talk by writers and artists speaking about human rights for Palestinians and people everywhere.

Speakers

Golbarg BAshi
Iranian-Swedish Professor Golbarg Bashi most recently taught at Columbia University, where she earned her PhD. In Middle Eastern Studies after an appointment at Rutgers University, and academic degrees earned in the UK, with an MsC from the University of Bristol in Women’s Studies, a BA from Manchester University in Near and Middle Eastern Studies with further studies at the Center for the Study of Islam at Cardiff University. As well as presenting talks about human rights in the Middle East, Bashi has authored the children’s book, P is for Palestine and Counting Upon the Olive Tree, A Palestine Numbers Book, trying to instill respect for and knowledge of Palestinian culture in young children with her writing.

John Halaka
John Halaka is a professor of art at the University of San Diego, whose philosophy is “artist as public servant”. With a BA from Brooklyn College, CUNY in Art and an MFA from the University of Houston, his recent project “engaged Palestinian communities speaking of their personal and cultural histories of displacement, resistance and survival.” He produces images and videos and was awarded a Fullbright Research Fellowship for his community-based project, Palestinian refugees living in Lebanon. His paintings, drawings, photographs and documentary films, and oral histories have been featured in solo exhibitions in Catalonia, Ramallah, Washington, DC, Palestine, Houston, U of Alaska at Anchorage and the AM Quattan Foundation in London. We welcome John to talk about his work as a professor, an artist, and a public servant.

Susan Abulhawa
Susan Abulhawa is a Palestinian American writer and political activist. She is the author of “Mornings in Jenin” and “The Blue Sky and Water” (2015, founder of the NGO, Playgrounds for Palestine and as a signatory for and champion of BDS, gave the keynote address at the BDS conference at the University of Pennsylvania.
